Under official UK Home Office rules on gov.uk, the Graduate Route visa grants 2 years of unsponsored post-study work permission if you apply on or before 31 December 2026, and 18 months if you apply on or after 1 January 2027 (PhD and doctoral qualifications remain 3 years).
Because you can only apply for the Graduate Route after successfully completing your UK degree and having your university report course completion to UKVI, students starting a Bachelor's or Master's programme in 2026 or 2027 will submit their Graduate visa application after 1 January 2027. Families should therefore plan around an 18-month unsponsored post-study work window.
What does an 18-month Graduate Route window mean in practice? It means students cannot wait until after graduation to start career preparation. We advise students to begin UK CV formatting, university career centre networking, and graduate scheme applications in their very first semester so they can transition smoothly to a Skilled Worker sponsored role before their 18-month Graduate visa expires.
